CAN selected the squad for the ACC Trophy with Kaniksha

The Himalayan Times, Kathmandu, June 17:

Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) called former U-19 skipper Kanishka Chaugain in the 19-member preliminary squad for the upcoming ACC Trophy Elite 2008 to be held in Malaysia from July 23 to August 3. Opening batsman Chaugain has not played for his country since he left for higher studies in the United States in 2006. Chaugain, who is still in the US pursuing his study and playing for local club there, was called following a dismal batting performance in the recently concluded ICC World Cricket League Division-V Cricket Tournament in Jersey.

Among the other members picked up are Binod Das, Paras Khadka, Shakti Gauchan, Mehboob Alam, Raj Kumar Pradhan, Dipendra Chaudhary, Sanjam Regmi, Mahesh Chhetri, Dhirendra Chand, Basanta Regmi, Gyanendra Malla, Amrit Bhattarai, Manjit Shrestha, Yashwant Subedi, Raj Shrestha, Sharad Vesawkar, Paresh Lohani and Anil Mandal. The players will undergo closed camp training from Thursday.

Earlier, Nepal’s Sri Lankan coach Roy Luke Dias had hinted at calling Chaugain for the ACC Trophy after Nepal failed to advance to the Division-IV because of the poor batting performance in Jersey. However, no major changes occurred in the team as hinted by Dias and skipper Binod Das.

Meanwhile, the Asian Cricket Council published the schedules for the tournament. Without mentioning the groups, the ACC has divided the 10 teams into two pools with Nepal drawn against Kuwait, Qatar, Singapore and Hong Kong in one group. Other five – hosts Malaysia, Afghanistan, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, UAE – are in the other group.

Nepal will open their campaign with a match against Hong Kong on July 25 before playing Qatar the next day. Nepal will play Singapore on July 28 and end their league matches on July 30 following a match against Kuwait.

It looks likeUAE vs Nepal semifinal and Afghanistan vs Hongkong..

    repeat of 2006
i hope this time results are different

  3. you are right!

no more place for those UAE or Hongkong who does not have crowd behind.

I would love if NEPAL and Afghanistan makes this true. then you may feel how much impact it will make crowd double.
I am very eager to watch our players playing against Indian or Pakintanis whom we had beaten in U19 level.

If they make the finals then both teams qualify for asia cup alogside test teams.
    Otherwise this tounament is meaningless.

  5. who cares it be Semifinal or Final, No one can stop us this time around.
Be ready to listen a very big sound of Nepalese Victory.

hip hip hurray! hip hip hurray!!

It is interesting to hear you two debate about which the better team is. I’m a huge Nepali fan but honestly, I think that both Nepal and Afghanistan are of the same caliber. I am also confident that if these 2 teams played against each other, both would win in their home grounds. Nepal plays really well in the Nepali turf which is a pitch meant for bowlers. Similarly, Afghanistan would probably beat us at their home.

So, I guess my point is that these teams could play several games between each other and they could probably come out even. Or the games would be very close. Both teams have the potential to beat countries like Canada or Ireland….just need more exposure and Nepal needs a few good batsmen..

    Prabin my dear!
    First i am from Pakistan.
Second i do think Afghanistan is better than Nepal as they have demonstrated it on several occasions!…
    Coming back to U-23 and A side….
Creating a U-23 and A side does not mean you dilute you club system…in europe they play U-23 tournament every two ears and they have just started the A-team tournament too..
It means you can give high quality matches to your developing players.

  9. Hellow Gulkhan,

you may be right on making more sides to get more experienced players. But still here, we prefer a club league than that which will give lots of experiencet to players.

Here I want to ask you, do you really think your national side is better than us? no way. If you are saying based on jersey’s tournament then you should better know, that was done all the trick by loosing the toss, if we won that toss then we could be batted first and the story could be diffirent.

we also saw, how good Afghani side is while chasing. You could understand how they replied against singapore’s 145 and Jersey’s mere 80 runs.

Nepal has always had good U-19 but above that they strugle. One reason is that these young players get into the national team too early.
A young person may succeed as bowler but as batman its much more difficult.

What Nepal needs to do is also have U-23 team and Nepal-A team besides the national team.
Than you whould have enough pool of experienced players.

  11. Nishchal,
You are may be right but these are the best batsmen available within the country so we can’t changed them at once. It will take some time but it will be happen.

here, I also prefer to have more batsmen but we need at least one specialist spinner in the side either Sanjam or Rajkumar and other your pick is good. and about captaincy, I dont want to change Binod, he has been doing good, if NEPAL wants to win every match all team members has to gel together like they doing past, dont argue for the captaincy because all candidates of this post are still there.

THE BATSMEN WHO DON’t perform are still getting chance.
The flop batsmen should be dropped. They must have pressur that if I don’t play good I will be dropped. Then they can play well.

I would like to see more batsmen in the squad where we could use them for strong batting lineup and back up for other batsman.

If I select, I would prefer:

    first 11,

Paras Khadka(Captain), Binod Das, Shakti Gauchan, Mahboob Alam, Kanishka Chaugai, Dipendra Chaudhary, Mahesh Chhetri, Gyanendra Malla, Sharad Vesawkar, Paresh Lohani and Anil Mandal.

Manjit Shrestha, Basanta Regmi and Yashwant Subedi

4 regular Bowlers and for fifth option we have Sharad, Gyanendra and Dipendra to fulfill who could be easily handy at times.
