Repuplica, Kathamandu, Nov 18:
There are a few players who made direct entry into the national team without playing age level international cricket matches. But this time two new faces — Binod Bhandari and Naresh Budhayer from Baitadi — have booked place in the national teams for an international tournament. They will be playing in the ACC T20 Cricket to be held in Dubai from Sunday.
Binod and Naresh are the only players in the present national squad, who have not played any international age level international matches. They have been selected for the national squad following their impressive performance in the First Springwood National T20 tournament held in June-July.
Binod, who started playing cricket seven years ago, had never thought that one day he would play from the national squad. The motivation he got five years back while playing the U-15 National Tournament paved way for his entry into the national team.
In the national T20, Binod´s reply to Mehboob Alam´s bowling, one of the most successful bowler of the national squad, is worth remembering. He smashed 13 runs in an over with three boundaries. In the over, Baitadi added 17 runs making a total of 44 runs after experienced Mehboob claimed seven scalps. Binod (21) has given continuity to his aggressive batting since. His aggressive batting style is considered the best in the 20-overs match.
Naresh, like Binod started his cricketing career from Shrestha Vison Club, Kanchanpur and Baitadi. They are the only players other than Dhirendra Chand to secure spots in the national team from Baitadi region. Like these two players from Baitadi, Dhirendra too had not played any age level international matches before making place in the national team.
It has been a dream for the 18-year old Naresh to secure place in the national squad, which includes some of his “ideal players” like captain Paras Khadka, Gyanendra Malla, Sarad Vesawkar and Mehboob Alam.
Naresh had struck a half century against the champs Birgunj in the U-19 National Tournament last year. His 115 runs for Nepal Telecom against SBI Bank in the T20 Cup held in the Capital on May was also enough to display his cricketing talents.
Binod has also his place as a wicketkeeper. Mahesh Chhetri is another wicket keeper of the team. But Binod has the high possibility to find himself in the playing set due to his aggressive batting.
“Mahesh is one of the reliable wicketkeeper of our squad and Binod is a good batsman. In T20, batsmen have a more important role than wicketkeeper and in the selection of wicketkeeper batting will be bonus,” said national team coach Roy Luke Dias.
As batting bonus for Binod, Naresh is gifted with good fielding skills. He is also a spinner. However, he has not given much priority to bowling after he was found ´chucking´ in the national T20. But Naresh has to wait for appropriate time to debut in international. He may not get place in playing 11 in the team and he too is well aware of this. “There are very low chances of me getting to play in the UAE, but I will wait for the opportunity,” Naresh said.
